The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is an international organization of Roman Catholic lay men and women of all ages, whose primary mission is to serve the poor and less fortunate.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 to serve impoverished people living in the slums of Paris, France.

The primary figure behind the society's founding was Frédéric Ozanam, a French lawyer, author, and professor in the Sorbonne.

He was 20 years old in the year the society was founded.

The society took Saint Vincent de Paul as its patron.

The Society numbers about 950,000 in some 132 countries worldwide, whose members operate through "conferences". A conference may be based out of a church, community center, school, hospital, etc., and is composed of Catholic volunteers who dedicate their time and resources to help those in need in their community. Non-Catholics may join with the understanding that the society is a Catholic organization.

In Australia, the society has engaged over 40,000 members and has many more volunteers. 'Vinnies Youth', the youth membership of the Society in Australia, engage young people from the age of 10 to 30 in the society's many works throughout the country.

Youth SVP (England and Wales) has involved over 10,000 young members since its founding 1999. Further to the success of Youth SVP, a new project, SVP 1833, has been started with the aim of involving younger adults. The target age group is 18-33.

Conference of St Ignatius

The mission of the SSVP is to do works of Christian charity and justice irregardless of race, status or religion. At our conference level, we help the poor and needy, the marginalized and the sick. We call the people we assist FINS (Friends-in-need).

Currently we are assisting needy and elderly FINS at Blk 89 and 90, Redhill Close (Blocks earmarked by HDB for housing "the poorest of the Singapore Poor") and also FINS of our parish. The majority of our FINS are either elderly, sick or disabled. Besides, monetary aid we provide special support by visiting them at least once a month, visiting them when they are sick or bringing them to see a doctor. We also plan outings/dinners for them especially during Easter and Christmas to promote fellowship and bonding.

Our conference also reaches out to migrant workers in Singapore - specifically to some 300 workers in Jurong and 170 Special Pass Holders at Cuff Road. We provide fruits, eggs and potatoes to the former and catered food to the latter once every week.

We also participate in community service by visiting St Joseph’s Home, Villa Francis’ Home and the Red Cross Children's Home for Disabled Children.

In serving our FINS, our goal is not only to give material benefits but more importantly to work and journey with them by giving of our time, friendship, patience, understanding, compassion and love. Our hope is for them to gain a greater sense of personal dignity and self-esteem and receive our help without embarrassment.
